HOWRAH: Sanskrit pundit Murari Mohan Bedanta Tirtha Shastri passed
away at a private hospital in the city early on Tuesday. He was
suffering from chest infection. He was 94.
Murari Mohan was the founder president of Howrah Pandit Samaj and received the Rashtrapati award for his works in 1988. In the 70s, he was a honorary fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of London. He also served as the chairman of the Sanskrit Shiksha Parishad for three years. He is survived by two sons and two daughters.
"He donated the amount he had received as an honorarium during his service as the chairman of the Parishad to the Sanskrit College," said Tarun Kanti Banerjee, his son.
Murari Mohan had practiced Sanskrit along with Indian philosophy and astrology and done research for several years. Several stalwarts from various fields had paid a visit to him during his lifetime. His elder son died.
A resident of Gopal Banerjee Lane in Central Howrah, Murari Mohan used to host Kalidas Festival every year on the first day of the Bengali month of Ashar. He also held important positions in several eminent organisations and committees.
Murari Mohan was suffering from age-related problem since long. He had to be hospitalized after he suffered severe chest infection.
Former chief justice of Calcutta high court and former governor Shyamal Sen visited his house to pay his last respect on Tuesday.
Others who were present at the late pundit's home on Tuesday included agriculture and marketing minister Arup Roy, chairman of Human Rights Commission Ashok Ganguly, MP Ambika Banerjee and local councillors.
